Operator-on-Duty Tutorial

Amongst the sites participating on the EELA Project, only UFRJ, CIEMAT and INFN had prior experience with EDG or EGEE Grid middleware. Other partners started with no experience on Grid middleware, or in some cases, even without knowledge of batch systems operation. During the first seven months WP2 focused on installation procedures and all training activities were based on the WP4 knowledge dissemination program.

At month 6, WP2 identified, based on interaction with the Resource Centre managers, that the induction training available until then wasn’t enough to fill the expertise gap on some sites. It was then decided to create an operation driven course where we could revise all operations protocols and fill the technical gaps. This successfully strategy allowed the integration of 15 sites (5 on certification stage). The following charts depict the competence map of 5 Resource Centre managers after the first so-called Operator-on-Duty (formerly ROC on-duty) tutorial.

During this tutorial EELA Resource Centre managers were briefed on operational issues of the project, and learned about how to troubleshoot their sites. Also, they installed the 4 Resource Centres utilized during EGRIS-1. After this tutorial, the status of the Latin American Sites had a noticeable improvement.

The dream became reality! Egris-1 is one week old and .... it is a success.

We set up here, in the Itacuruçá island, a complete and independent grid (The Lost Island Grid) to be used during the ROC on Duty tutorial and the EELA Grid School.

We have four sites, each one being composed of a Computing Element, a Storage Element, user interfaces and worker nodes. Some central services are also running here: BDII, Resource Broker, LFC, AMGA, VOMS , MyProxy and RGMA.
We are using a SAM instance, also installed in the island, to monitor most of the gLite services and also some ad-hoc tests to monitor the services not covered by SAM, like user interfaces and worker nodes.

We are running also a blog at http://egris200.eela.ufrj.br so you can follow the day-to-day life of the school.

The last but not the least: we are connected to the rest of the world via a dedicated broad band link of 10 Mb/s.
